New School Partnership in Lawndale

On September 4, 2013, PEARL’s Director, Sharona Drake, and YMEN’s Executive Director, Michael Trout, met with the new principal at Dvorak Elementary School and a new partnership was born! YMEN will be working in partnership with the United Way of Metropolitan Chicago to increase attendance and graduation rates for students in North Lawndale. The CORE of the program will be the “Dare to be King” and “Dare to be Queen” curricula designed by the Urban Leadership Institute in Baltimore, Maryland.

This project will provide wrap-around academic support, as well as, social/emotional support teaching conflict resolution skills to fourty-five 6th grade boys and girls. While the initial project was designed for 20 youth, the Polk Bros. Foundation provided additional funding to YMEN that allowed us to double our capacity.

We are so grateful to Ms. White, the Principal of Dvorak School for her leadership in forging this “school-community organization” partnership.
