Saturday University

What is Saturday University?

Saturday University is a comprehensive learning system designed to improve the academic performance of the PEARL students and features math, reading, and writing tutoring by qualified, passionate volunteers and staff who are committed to raising the achievement levels of our children.

Why is this program important?

Students in low-income, mostly Black and Latino neighborhoods are academically performing at incredibly low levels. In 2013, only 11% of Black, 8th-grade students in Chicago scored at or above a proficient level in reading and only 10% of Black, 8th-grade students scored at or above a proficient level in math, according to the National Assessment for Educational Progress (nicknamed “The Nation’s Report Card”). This means that 89% of these students are NOT reading proficiently and 90% of them are NOT calculating and problem-solving proficiently in math!

Our students need help, but tutoring can be incredibly expensive. Saturday University presents an opportunity for parents and communities to take control of their children’s education by ensuring they receive the extra support needed to become and remain proficient.
